As sometimes happens, my soup selection today (tomato) was constrained by my schedule. I am consenting subjects for a study that is preparing to close to enrollment, which means that this week I am focusing on meeting my enrollment goals. I'm down at the clinic for a good chunk of the day. Today, I tried to pick up my soup at 10:40 am. I usually try and pick up my soup at around 10:50 am. 10 minutes can make a big difference. If I go after 11:00 am, most of the cafeterias are packed with throngs of hungry OHSU workers. After 12:00 pm the crowds have died out, but I find myself left with nothing but sad, postprandial scraps and remnants. So, today I crossed my fingers and headed down to the MacHall cafe, hoping that there was some kind of soup selection that had been put out a little early. There was not. This forced me to get a little creative, and shuffle down to the Multnomah Pavilion cafe. The Multnomah Pavilion is regularly touted as "the oldest building on campus." I've heard that this title actually belongs to the VA's human resources building, but I have yet to verify this little snippet of information with the campus historian, if there is one. At any rate, the Multnomah Pavilion boasts a psychiatric ward. It also has a cafe. The chef at the Multnomah Pavilian cafe (or cafe "North," as I have heard it called by those in the know) is very nice, but doesn't seem to love vegetables in the same way that the MacHall cafe chef does. To boot, the cafe north's "12-oz" soup cup has none of the heft of MacHall's hearty serving. An anorexic cousin to MacHall's husky boy, the cafe North soup forces me to supplement my lunch with things like vegetarian pizza or tofu spring rolls (the former of which is depicted here, minus one bite).

Sundays are always bad days for soup at OHSU. Most of the cafes are closed. The only cafe that's close to me that I know to be open is the "cafe on third." Situated on the 3rd floor of the main OHSU hospital, the cafe on third boasts a very modest soup selection. It generally has one rotating soup and the buffalo chili. I've long stared down the buffalo chili without ever giving it a try. Today, in the interest of the blogosphere, I decided to give the buffalo chili a go. I'm eating at my desk again, as I am wont to do when I have a lot of work to finish. The chili's really not very good. But sometimes that's all life is throwing at you: buffalo chili. And you've just got to roll with it.

This soup actually isn't from OHSU, but rather a little place on Hawthorne called Than Thao. It is called "sizzling rice soup," and has shrimp, chicken, carrots, corn, and zucchini. The rice is in the box off to the left. It makes a sizzling sound - kind of akin to Rice Krispies - when you pour the rice into the soup. I'm eating the soup with my grandmother, who is one of my favorite people in all the world. That is her placemat in the photo. She's having spanakopita, so she doesn't get to be in the photo.

I briefly considered waiting until January 1st, 2009 to make my first post. But December 4th, 2009 is as good a day as any. This is my soup blog. Today I had rosemary zucchini soup at the MacHall Cafe. I like the MacHall Cafe because they give you the largest portions for your money. 3.75 (checking out with the very nice lady with the white hair) buys you a 12-oz. soup and a half a sandwich. I like the veggie sandwich.
